Virginia is Again Ranked Among the Best States for Hospital Patient Safety
May 5, 2025
The Spring 2025 Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Grades Rank Virginia Top Five Among States; 47 Percent of Virginia Hospitals Earned “A” Grades
RICHMOND, VA – Virginia’s standing as one of the top states in the nation for patient safety in hospital settings has again been affirmed in the Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Grade rankings. The Commonwealth is a top five state in the Spring 2025 state rankings that are based on the share of hospitals in each state that earn “A” grades. Overall, 47.1% of Virginia hospitals received an “A” grade.
“Prioritizing safety and positive patient outcomes are guiding principles for hospitals across Virginia,” said Valley Health President and CEO Mark Nantz, the Chair of the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association’s (VHHA) Board of Directors. “These concepts are central to hospitals’ mission-oriented service and a bedrock of our commitment to the communities we serve. It is gratifying to see that focus reflected in the Spring 2025 Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Grade rankings, which serve as a testament to the effort of dedicated professionals working in hospitals across Virginia.”
Prior to the current Spring 2025 rankings, Virginia ranked second in the Fall 2024, Spring 2024, Fall 2023, Fall 2022, and the Spring 2022 periods. The Commonwealth has regularly been a high-achieving state in the bi-annual Leapfrog ratings: Virginia was first overall in the Fall 2021 rankings, fourth in Spring 2021, sixth in Fall 2020, third in Fall 2019, second in Spring 2019, third in Fall 2018, and fifth in Spring 2018.
“For years, Virginia hospitals have been intentional about collaboration across organizations to promote and elevate safety culture,” added VHHA President and CEO Sean T. Connaughton. “The multi-year run of Virginia and its hospitals being consistently ranked as top patient safety performers by the Leapfrog Group is a real-world manifestation of that work, which has also been recognized with national accolades such as the 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Awards from Healthgrades. These accomplishments are part of continuing efforts by hospitals to make Virginia the healthiest state in the nation.”
The Hospital Safety Grade program assigns letter grades to nearly 3,000 general acute care hospitals across the nation based on data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Group, and other sources. In the latest rankings, 31 of 69 Virginia private general acute care hospitals received an “A” grade, placing the Commonwealth fifth among states in the nation. The list of current “A” rated Virginia hospitals includes the hospitals listed below.
