Nineteen Virginia Hospitals from Around the Commonwealth are Recipients of the 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades; Several Hospitals Also Rated Among ‘America’s Best’
RICHMOND, VA – Nineteen Virginia hospitals have earned positive acclaim for being leaders in patient safety excellence in the 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Awards from Healthgrades. This recognition continues a trend for Virginia hospitals, which in recent years have been highly ranked by several organizations that conduct annual and bi-annual assessments of the clinical and patient safety performance of hospitals across the nation. The Healthgrades awards recognize the top hospitals in the nation for patient safety. Several Virginia hospitals that earned 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Awards have also been named among the best overall hospitals in the nation.
Prior to the latest Healthgrades awards, Virginia hospitals have routinely been recognized for strong patient safety culture performance in the bi-annual Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Grade state rankings. The Commonwealth was second overall in the Fall 2024 Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Grade state rankings, the Spring 2024 rankings, the Fall 2023 rankings, the Fall 2022 rankings, and the Spring 2022 rankings. Virginia was first overall in the Fall 2021 rankings, fourth in Spring 2021, sixth in Fall 2020, third in Fall 2019, second in Spring 2019, third in Fall 2018, and fifth in Spring 2018. In addition to the Leapfrog Group rankings and the Healthgrades awards, Virginia hospitals from Riverside Health System and Vally Health System were recently recognized by Chartis on the 2025 lists for Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals and Top 100 Rural and Community Hospitals.
“Virginia hospitals and their dedicated team members consistently evince an unwavering commitment to enhancing the health of our communities through the delivery of safe, compassionate, patient-centric care,” said Michael Elliott, VCU Health Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President and Chair of the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association’s (VHHA) Board of Directors. “The new Healthgrades awards affirm the positive results of that approach to caring for the communities we serve.”
