2022 Community Benefit Report

January 16, 2022

VHHA takes pride in annually publishing the Community Benefit report. This publication is an important opportunity to highlight the substantial community contributions, public health and safety investments, and economic impact Virginia’s local hospitals and health systems make each day. These contributions include provision of essential health services to support community well-being, extensive free and discounted care to patients without insurance, and many other programs that support health care access, critical and often under-funded health services, and promote quality of life in Virginia.

These community benefit investments include free care and financial assistance to needy people, Medicaid program losses, subsidized health services such as trauma care, behavioral health, and community programs that improve the health of people in communities across Virginia. The 2022 Annual Report on Community Benefit shows that Virginia hospitals provided $3.1 billion in community benefit in 2020, contribute more than $45 billion in positive economic activity, are major employers in the Commonwealth that invest $10 billion in salary and benefits, and are essential health providers serving on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic.
