VHHA Develops Virginia Hospital Workforce Data Dashboard to Track State, National Trends
June 2, 2025
The Virginia Hospital Workforce Dashboard is a Public-Facing, Interactive Tool with State and National Data on Hospital Employment, Wages, and In-Demand Occupations
RICHMOND, VA – The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association’s (VHHA) Data Analytics Team has developed a new public-facing data tool that enables users to evaluate national and state-level data on trends in hospital employment, wages, and in-demand occupations.
The Virginia Hospital Workforce Dashboard is an interactive tool that leverages data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) program as well the annual Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) program. The construction of the dashboard on the foundation of those data sources provides a more representative and consistent picture of hospital workforce supply and demand trends. The dashboard tool also has an array of built-in filters and features so users can evaluate the data by zooming in on Virginia or expanding their view to compare hospital job categories across states to identify patterns or derive key insights.
VHHA has produced the dashboard as the health care sector continues to contend with workforce challenges and projected growth in demand for service utilization. BLS indicates that registered nurse employment in the U.S. is expected to grow to more than 3.4 million by 2033 to meet the projected demand for services, an increase of 197,200 jobs. Across all physician specialties in the U.S., there is a projected shortage of 187,130 full-time equivalent physicians in 2037, according to the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis. Projections also forecast growth across many other health care occupations including the behavioral health profession and support roles such as technicians, medical assistants, home health aides, and nursing assistants. Many of these workforce conditions reflect a broader trend of rising demand for health care services as the Baby Boomer generation retires.
To help address health care staffing needs, VHHA and its members launched the On Board Virginia workforce recruitment and retention initiative in 2022.
“The Virginia Hospital Workforce Dashboard is a readily accessible tool that helps put health care workforce and staffing needs in perspective for the public at a time when providers face rising demand for medical services from patients and families,” said VHHA President and CEO Sean T. Connaughton. “Meeting the treatment needs of future generations requires continued promotion of health care careers and investment in the education and training pipeline. Providing this data tool on vhha.com is part of our continuing work to stimulate the health care workforce of the future and to inform the public and policymakers about our shared health delivery system.”
The Virginia Hospital Workforce Dashboard is the latest in a series of interactive tools published by the VHHA Data Analytics Team to help enhance public understanding of the health care delivery system in the Commonwealth. Other VHHA data dashboards include the Behavioral Health Inpatient Data Dashboard, the SDOH Data Dashboard, the Virginia Hospital Patient Experience Data Dashboard, and the Community Health Legislative Dashboards. During the COVID-19 pandemic, VHHA published the Virginia Hospital COVID-19 Data Dashboard from April 2020-April 2023. During that span, the dashboard was viewed more than 8 million times.
