Virginia Hospital Employment

Virginia hospitals and health systems continue to serve the Commonwealth and its residents as providers of essential health care services and as economic cornerstones through employment and job creation. In many communities throughout Virginia, hospitals are among the largest local regional employers. The latest Virginia Labor Market Index figures confirm this. Employment data from the first quarter of 2019 show that Virginia hospitals directly provide more than 130,500 jobs. That represents a 1.96 percent increase in hospital employment figures from the second quarter of 2018. The interactive dashboard below highlights hospital employment figures. It is important to note that direct hospital employment figures do not account for thousands of additional jobs hospitals support through their presence, operations, and investments in communities. Overall, Virginia hospitals account for roughly $40 billion in annual economic activity in the state, including billions devoted to staff salaries and benefits, as well as billions in spending with local businesses and vendors that all helps stimulate the state economy. Hospitals also contribute more than $3 billion in annual community benefit to Virginia through charity care, community building efforts, health screenings and other services, and so much more.
